10 Years Strong – Blahnik Redefines Ballroom

On May 1, 2000, Legends Ball at the Brooklyn Y in New York City, the HOUSE OF BLAHNIK was born!  It was during this evening of captivating moments and well defined creativity that Blahnik electrified audiences with show-stopping runway and vogue performances.

“The House of Blahnik is the ballroom incarnation of the musical and iconic Jackson family,” says Overall Father Jay Blahnik.  Father Jay explained, “like the Jackson’s we [Blahnik] have been under massive scrutiny; but we have prevailed.”  Much like the Jackson family, Blahnik was founded by five pioneering individuals from the ballroom community – Michael Ebony [Garcon], Preston Ebony, Jay Ebony [Blahnik], Hector and Jasmine Infiniti.  These individuals built Blahnik with a solid foundation on the three principles of: Self, Family and Community.

Blahnik has maintained an on-going commitment in and outside of the ballroom/house community with their involvement with Kwanzaa, Philadelphia Black Pride, LGBT Health Summit and launch of the Blahnik Scholarship.  ”Throughout the entire Blahnik leadership and membership there is a deep-rooted dedication to the public health and human services needs of the LGBT community,” says Dj Robbie Rob Blahnik/Robert K. Burns – Blahnik’s 1st Interim Executive Director.  Burns explains, “we have a history of taking care of our own, creatively developing a means to sustain our investments in community.”  In the winter of 2010, Blahnik will launch their newest initiative Legends Care  - with their initial focus on anti-violence within the ballroom/house community.

Blahnik has and will continue to create, inspire and be at the forefront  of innovation and positive community change.  The best is still yet to come and May 22nd will unveil a first look into the future of Blahnik.
